1.2 Stem Cells: The Building Blocks of Regenerative Medicine

Stem cells are special cells with two unique abilities:

  • they can self-renew (make more stem cells),
  • they can differentiate into different cell types (muscle, nerve, blood).

In regenerative medicine, stem cells are used to:

  • grow new tissue,
  • repair damaged organs,
  • study diseases in laboratory conditions.

Unlike ordinary cells, stem cells act as biological “starting points”, making them essential for growing lab-made tissues and organs.
