1.5 Can We Print a Human Heart?

The human heart is one of the most complex organs in the body. It must:

  • pump continuously,
  • contain multiple tissue types,
  • include a dense network of blood vessels,
  • work in perfect coordination.

While scientists have successfully grown simple tissues and small organ models, printing a fully functional human heart remains a major scientific challenge.
Just because something is possible in theory does not mean it is fully achievable today.

Suggested 3D visualization resources:
To better understand the dynamic structure and function of the human heart, students are encouraged to explore the following animated 3D heart models. These visualizations help illustrate why recreating a fully functional heart is one of the greatest challenges in regenerative medicine.
