Augmented Reality (AR) tools and application

3.2 Practical Suggestions for Integration into the Learning Experience

Gamified learning environments or interactive 3D virtual worlds can challenge students to explore green infrastructure like green roofs and vertical gardens in a city to mitigate the effects of climate change like flooding and heatwaves. This makes learning about urban design both fun and informative.

Exercise: “Green up the building” AR App

This AR exercise helps students explore how green roofs and vertical gardens can transform buildings and improve urban environments. The “Green up the building” exercise is designed as a game to make learning interactive and fun, while reinforcing key sustainability concepts. Students will understand how vegetation on buildings helps. Students will be challenged to “green” a virtual building they see through AR. Their mission is to add green roofs and vertical gardens strategically in order to maximize environmental benefits. As they play, they will see real-time overlays showing how plants reduce heat.

By making learning more immersive, interactive, and directly relevant to the students' immediate environment, AR technology significantly strengthens their connection to urban ecosystems and promotes more effective knowledge building for future sustainable urban development.
