Like climate change, global biodiversity loss is an issue of great significance that should be addressed urgently. Human survival is dependent on the diverse range of organisms inhabiting the planet because they affect ecosystem processes and functions. There is growing evidence that biodiversity loss has at least as significant an impact on ecosystem processes and functions as climate change does or will. As biodiversity is lost and ecosystems are degraded, the bio-capacity of the planet to support living organisms reduces. As bio-capacity decreases there are diminishing resources available to support a growing human population and increasing collective ecological footprint.
